INTRODUCTION

Least Available Depth (LAD) refers to the minimum depth of water available in a navigational channel at a particular stretch and time. It is one of the most critical parameters for safe and efficient inland water transport. Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) regularly monitored and published LAD information for the declared National Waterways on website. LAD determines the maximum permissible draft of vessels, safe cargo carrying capacity, navigation planning and route scheduling and seasonal movement feasibility.

LAD plays a crucial role in Vessel Operations, Safety of vessels, Dredging Planning and Trade & Logistics Efficiency. It is measured through Hydrographic surveys, Echo sounders, GPS- based depth monitoring systems or River Information System (RIS).
