Consultancy Studies/ Surveys

The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) engages in consultancy studies and surveys to support evidence-based planning, design, and implementation of inland waterway projects. These activities include hydrological and hydrographic surveys, feasibility and detailed engineering studies, alignment investigations, traffic and modal shift analysis, environmental assessments, and cost-benefit evaluations. The outputs from these studies inform project design, investment decisions, and navigational management on National Waterways.

Consultancy studies and surveys are carried out using approved technical methodologies, state-of-the-art survey equipment, and internationally recognised practices. The scope of work ranges from data collection and mapping to technical analysis and formulation of recommendations, ensuring that waterway development is technically sound, environmentally compliant, and aligned with operational requirements.

CategoryPurposeTechnical Specifications / Methods
Hydrographic SurveysMeasurement of water depth, channel geometry, and sub-surface features to determine navigable depths and shoal locations.Multibeam echo sounders, single beam sounders, GPS positioning; data for channel design and dredging planning.
Hydrological StudiesAssessment of river discharge, seasonal flow variations, and water level regimes to support design of navigation structures.Streamflow gauging, stage-discharge relationships, seasonal water balance models; informs lock/dam planning.
Feasibility StudiesEvaluation of navigational potential, cost-benefit analysis, and strategic fit of proposed inland waterway projects.Technical and economic feasibility analyses, traffic forecasts, modal shift assessment, environmental screening.
Detailed Project Reports (DPR)Preparation of engineering designs, construction estimates, environmental and social impact framework for project implementation.Civil, structural, hydraulic designs; cost estimates; environmental management plans; implementation schedules.
Environmental & Social AssessmentsBaseline studies and impact evaluation for project approvals and compliance with statutory requirements.EIA/EMP frameworks, stakeholder consultations, mitigation planning; compliance with national regulations.
Traffic & Modal ForecastingAnalysis of cargo/passenger potential and forecast of inland waterway traffic volumes.Demand modelling, scenario analysis, multimodal integration assessment; informs planning and investment decisions.
